For this project we were told we were going to be creating our very own music video however it had to be 1 minute long. We were told what our tasks were going to be. Firstly to pick a song then think of locations that we would like to film in, then create a story board and finally piece all the things together, although it sounded simple there were a lot of things and many obstacles that we had to overcome. We were shown an idea of a music video, it started with a girl doing ballet in a tunnel and it cut to different shots of different things. The video in my opinion was alright, I don't really enjoy it as the song in the ending just stops instead of fades which doesn't sound nice at all but other than that it was satisfactory.
My partner was a production arts student called Adam, as a team we looked over the ideas that we had, at first we wanted to have a heavy metal song where we could then add effects to the video to make it look as if it was a drunk person's point of view, but as soon as we started to look at different songs we got other ideas. We had a lot of choices to choose from and the only way it was going to be fair was if we picked up a name of a song from a lucky dip so we chooses one at random and we ended up getting Don't speak by a band called No doubt. Both Adam and I thought it was the best choice and we really happy with the song all that was left to do was chose different sections of the 4 and a half minute video. We heard the song a couple of times and looked at a lyric video so we could see which words we could incorporate in at what ever time we wanted. We had our plan we took bits and pieces from different sections of the song and combined it with other sections and I have to say it sounded fanominal all that was left to do was pick locations that we wanted to film in and create a storyboard.
The next week following up we were given iPods and we were told to go looks t the locations that we wanted and take pictures of them. The chosen locations were in the St Pancreas area, Adam and I both thought that they were very good locations and interesting at the same time. We went off to St Pancreas and we picked the square and the canal as our chosen locations, at the same time we began to get a story and an idea of what we wanted to see in the video and the shots that we were going to use. Next we had to get some actors to feature in our video but however due to some problems we weren't able to get anyone untill we managed to ask some music students if they were willing to help us create our vision and lucky enough we had our actors. We created a story board based on the idea of the locations and the song Don't speak and it looked interesting as well.
We are a rough sketch of the story and built our idea off of that. It was about a break up and a girl finding freedom from it, it featured a cyclical structure as we going to use the scene from the beginning to end it as well and involved different camera angles and shots that meant different emotions and feelings behind it. Due to me having studied media studies in my school I understood the different things and I already had experience with filming as I had created a movie instead of a music video in the past.
The day of filming was here and we had our actors story board and locations, we headed to our locations and started to film some of the scenes that we had in mind such as the beginning and the ending, the filming went fantastic and on the way my partner had the idea of just filming the two actors without them knowing and it went really really well, it looked realistic and it was amazing footage that we had just in case we wanted to use it. We don't quite finish filming everything so we had to go and do it however the people who featured in the video were busy at the time so instead I borrowed helped from a production arts student Nizia and we filmed my favourite idea of the whole storyboard where the girl throws the ring in to the canal and moves on. We decided to shoot this one scene a couple of times and do different angles and shots of it so then it could look professional and it did we created the effect of the girl moving on and we presented the idea perfectly.
When we had to piece everything together there was a lot of technical difficulties involving the loss of the footage and song, because of that I started panicking and felt very annoyed with the situation however my friend Zia thought of creating a new video by using some of the footage she had on her phone. The idea was based on freedom and letting go so we used the song freedom by Beyonce and decided to use decent footage to create a story behind it and lucky enough again we managed to pull it off and it worked very well.
To evaluate I believed that everything went just as planned untill I was faced with the biggest problem of lost footage and song. I think that next time I will save everything on a hard drive twice just in case so then I wouldn't have that problem again. Furthermore in the future I will create a schedule so that I wouldn't have loss of actors as well.
